Service for Credit Option

Alden-Conger service for Credit

The Alden-Conger School has initiated a Service for Credit option for students in grades 9-12 beginning with the 2007-2008 school year. This program was developed to encourage students to become contributing citizens to our society. Students can earn up to 1/2 credit each year toward graduation requirements, and seniors who have completed (with documentation) 175 or more hours during grades 9-12 will be recognized at graduation.

Considering the need of our communities for volunteer services, we belive students can earn hours for graduation credit while fulfilling the community need. The action of volunteering can build a better tomorrow by benefiting students and their community. In addition, studies have shown that the social benifits of volunteering can inprove physical, mental, and emotional health.

Many admission forms for college, applications for scholarships, and resumes for employment ask for what you have done in the way of volunteer and community service. Many of the things you already do may count toward the service hours, so this is just a way to keep track and organize your hours while getting the benifit of some graduation credit.

There are many things that can be done that would meet the requirments for the program, but to avoid any misundersandings, please get approval for any project not on the service for credit option page. Also needed is the form that needs to be completed by you and your adult supervisor.

Each year high school students can earn 1/4 credit per semester by completing and documenting at least 30 hours of volunteer service within the designated time frame. If a student wishes toearn 1/2 credit, hours completed from June 1 through December 31 must be submitted by January 15 for the first semester credit, hours completed from January 1 through May 15 must be submitted by May 20 for second semester credit. Students who wish to earn 1/4 credit must submit hours from June 1 through May 15 by May 20. Hours of servicemay be distributed among no more than three different organizations/activities for each request for credit.
